Slow feasting in Kaaawa

September 8, 2007

New neighbor Doug shows off his stuff.

1
It was the beginning of an incredible Saturday night feast prepared by Doug, our new neighbor in Kaaawa. He is, we learned, a very fine gourmet cook who has fun with his creations. First course was a shrimp-avocado salad. Wow!
2
More wine was opened, then preparations began on the second course.
3
The plan: slow cooked barley risotto with porcini mushrooms.
4
It was a long process, constantly stirring the risotto and keeping enough liquid in it while cooking.
5
Diced porcini mushrooms were added towards the end of the cooking, followed by another fresh mushroom.
6
The final product as it arrived at the table.
7
More wine and talk, then work started on the third course, pork chops with strawberries, and I'm not sure what else. After the chops were browned, they went into the oven briefly while the strawberries were sauteed in the pan drippings and other goodies.
8
The chops were added back in very briefly.
9
Awaiting the plating.
10
Almost there.
11
The final product.
